The national bamboo mission has listed three major targets:

• To use bamboo development as an instrument of poverty alleviation and employment generation, particularly in the rural sector

• To promote organised production and processing of bamboo shoots, and their consumption as a part of the national effort to eliminate micronutrient deficiency

• To use bamboo as a means to reclaim degraded land, conserve soil, improve the environment and carry out drought-proofing.
