There are as many as 11 child labour schools. As most children here are compelled to work to support their families, these schools allow them to access non-formal elementary education. They dangle an incentive though: A monthly stipend of Rs 100 and a mid-day meal to each student. Besides, a doctor from the local government hospital checks up on all students. "Unlike regular schools, a class here comprises children of different age groups. Special attention is given to each child to bridge the gap with the mainstream," says supervisor Rumpti Chandra. Despite the above-mentioned baits, many students fail to attend classes regularly. Others migrate with their parents on a seasonal basis to bigger cities like Kolkata, Ranchi and Patna. Much of the construction labour there is a one-time affair.
