The National Institute of Ocean Technology, a scientific body under the control of the Union Ocean Development Department, has designed a desalination plant that can produce 10 million litres a day (MLD)."To be operated under the low temperature thermal desalination (LTTD) technology, the plant can be installed in 12 to 16 months," S. Kathiroli, Director of the NIOT, told presspersons on Friday, adding that the estimated cost of the project was Rs. 70 to 80 crores.Expressing his organisation's keenness to help all the coastal States including Tamil Nadu, the Director said that now, the cost of production of water was seven paise per litre. "Of this, three to four paise is for meeting the power bill. So, we are working on a model that will take care of water and power production," he said.
