New Delhi: The Yamuna once again attained threatening proportions on Monday as the river crossed the danger mark of 204.83 m. Several low lying areas along the bank were evacuated and hundreds of slum dwellers took shelter along the main Yamuna Pushta road.
At 8.30 pm, the water level had risen to 205.4 m and according to revised forecast, the level was expected to touch a high of 205.8 m by Tuesday afternoon and the water is expected to start receding by Wednesday morning.
After Haryana released 4.09 lakh cusec of water on Saturday evening, the Yamuna swelled massively, inundating almost all jhuggi clusters on its banks. Evacuation started on Sunday evening and continued till Monday afternoon. Authorities, however, were concerned over the fact that several slum dwellers had refused to leave their homes unless it became imperative to do so.
