Low-lying areas in five upazilas of Sherpur went under water on Friday as eight rivers burst their banks due to incessant rain and onrush of water from hills. Official and local sources said water levels in the old Brahmaputra, Bhogai, Chellakhali, Maharashi, Someaswari, Kalagusha, Jhinai and Dashani rivers marked sharp rise, flooding low-lying areas in sadar, Jhinaigati, Sribardi, Nakla and Nalitabari upazilas. The Bhogai was flowing 50cm above its danger level at Nalitabari point damaging a 100-foot cross-dam at village Fakirpara under Marichpara union, inundating several hundred dwelling houses in the area. Another cross-dam in the Takimari area under Nalitabari upazila was damaged as water from the rain-fed Chellakhali poured into the area. A good number of dwelling houses of three villages under Baghber union and newly cultivated aus paddy were damaged by the rolling floodwater. Huge fish from many ponds and fish farms under Kalsapar, Jogania and Baghber unions were also washed away by the gushing water. The floodwater from Maharashi damaged a 10-foot cross-dam at Dighipar under Jhinaigati upazila, sending low-lying areas, including Chatal, Ahmed Nagor, Dighipar and Bagadubi, under water.
