Relegated to the backyard by the invasion of synthetic fabrics, jute has sprung up to revolutionise rural connectivity. For the first time, geo-textiles made of jute will be used to find a solution to the problems of rapid wear and tear of rural roads, especially in areas prone to floods and soil erosion. When fully employed, jute geo-textile technology will mark a significant departure from traditionally constructed roads that fail to withstand the rigours of nature. To being with, a pilot project using jute geo-textile technology will be launched in select low-lying flood-prone areas of West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the current fiscal. The Rs 22-crore project will cover nearly 48 km - two stretches of roads each under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in the five states.
