Shillong: The Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) has reiterated its opposition to the proposed mining of uranium by the UCIL in the State. In a letter to Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy here on Friday, LYWA president BS Lyngdoh stated that nearly 90 per cent of the people in the area in West Khasi Hills are totally against the proposed uranium mining project at Phodkylleng-Pyndensohiong in West Khasi Hills district. He further recalled that the rally held at Umdohlun on February 10, 2006 and the public hearing conducted by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MPSCB) at Nangbah-Jynrin on June 12, 2007 had clearly proved that majority of the people are against the mining of uranium. With regard to development of the villages in the district, LYWA president said the State Government has continuously neglected the overall development of West Khasi Hills district despite repeated requests to bring about development to the people.
