Machines take over farms

Karimnagar, Sept. 19: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme of the Central government has inadvertently led to large-scale mechanisation in the agriculture sector of the district. More than 4.50 lakh people have been working on various NREGS projects in the district and this has created acute shortage of farm labourers.
Farmers who are unable to get enough labourers for harvesting their field are now opting for mechanical harvesters. This has helped them continue their agricultural operations without hindrance. The good rains and the ongoing expansion of irrigation cover have proved to be an inspiration to farmers and they are not ready to allow lack of labourers to dampen their spirit.
Karimnagar, which produced a record 10 lakh tonnes of paddy in the last rabi season, is striving to attain the status of the state
