Maharashtra reports largest slum population

Maharashtra has 10.6 million people living in slums, the largest among the States, with Andhra Pradesh reporting the most number of towns, 76, with slums, according to the latest census figures. In Maharashtra, 31.7 per cent of the 33.6 million people in the 62 towns reporting slums lived in such conditions. The dubious record of the largest proportion of people living in slums however goes to Andhra Pradesh. The other states with very large numbers in the slums are Uttar Pradesh (4.2 million), West Bengal (3.8 million) and Tamil Nadu (2.8 million).
