Bacteria that eat up pollutants could soon be cleaning up the planet, research from Germany suggests. Scientists at the Technische Universitat in Berlin, writing in the journal Nature, say they have identified a bacterial strain that acts on chlorinated benzene chemicals. These toxic chemicals are used as solvents in paints and persist for a long time in the environment, accumulating in the food chain.
