Malaria deaths on the decline in State

"Assam, till June this year, has recorded only 64 deaths caused by malaria, which is the lowest in the last one decade. Of the 64 deaths, 34 have been reported from Karbi Anglong. Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed this before mediapersons today, asserting that the State would soon manage to bring the figure further down. While the total number of malaria deaths in 2006 was 304, in 2007 the same dropped to 152, Sarma said adding that the Kamrup district registered just one death till this point of time. "As most of the deaths are recorded during June and July, the figure may go up, but even then, the current year's figure would still be the lowest in the last one decade,' Sarma pointed out. In needs mention here that the month of June, over the years, has been recording the most number of malaria deaths. In 2005,while the total number of deaths was 113, 82 of them were registered in the month of June alone. Similarly, the figure in 2006 and 2007 stood at 344 (244 in June only) and 152 (115 in June only) respectively. "As far as deaths in Karbi Anglong is concerned, we hardly have any control over the area,' the Minister rued. The Minister further informed that compared to 67,885 cases which tested positive registered in the year 2005, the same came down to just 28174 this year till June.
