Maldives Participate in Pre-COP18 Ministerial meeting

Deputy Minister for Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr. Abdullahi Majeed is participating as the head of Maldivian Delegation in the Pre-COP18 ministerial meeting held in Seoul, South Korea from 22-23 October 2012. The meeting is a precursor to the 18th Conference of Parties to United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP18) which is to be held in Doha, Qatar from 26 November to 7th December 2012.
The purpose of this meeting is to address the difference of opinions between the States and give political guidance for number of issues in climate change negotiations to come to an agreement in Doha, Qatar in COP18.
Key issues includes the outstanding issues of Ad-hoc Working Group for Long-term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA) particularly in the mean of implementation before its closure in Doha and finalizing the terms, conditions and commitments for 2nd Commitment Period of Kyoto Protocol(KP2) under Ad-hoc Working Group for Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) which due to start implementation on 1st January 2013. And Ad-hoc Working Group on Durban Platform (ADP) would be looking to start its work in a balanced manner taking into account all concerns of the Parties.
The Pre-COP meeting will be looking for political guidance which is required to make progress in climate change negotiation in Doha.. About 50 States is represented by political head of environmental ministries of their respective States in this Pre-COP18 ministerial meeting.
