Man-animal conflict, more so than poaching, has been cited as the primary cause for the steady depletion of the tiger population. Says the director of a tiger conservation programme at the World Wildlife Fund-India, Dr M.K. Ranjitsinh: "With the unabated increase in human and livestock populations, the protected areas (PAS) and the tigers living in such areas are facing an escalating state of siege."
