Manmohan to evaluate Bharat Nirman

Eight months after its implementation, the performance of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's flagship programme Bharat Nirman will be evaluated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a meeting of the National Rural Infrastructure Committee. He will also examine the future plans of the ministries and departments involved in the programme. The programme launched last fiscal envisages infrastructure development in six core areas including irrigation, rural connectivity, rural housing, drinking water supply, rural electrification and rural telephone connectivity. Allocation to the programme was hiked by an impressive 54% in 2006-07 to Rs 18,696 crore against an allocation of Rs 12,160 crore in the previous fiscal.
