Mahatma Gandhi had envisaged that in free India, nobody will carry human waste on their heads. But in Jharkhand manual scavenging is a harsh reality. In many parts of the state, there are thousands of people, particularly women, who carry human waste on their heads every morning. The women scavangers are found in Ranchi, Dumka, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad. Each woman work with three to four houses, earning Rs 150 to Rs 200 per month. "The report in media does not change our life. Some time the government reacts and constructs some toilets. But that badly affects our income," said Budhani Devi, who works in Ratu locality of Ranchi.
