The Cunchelim Action Committee (CAC) has voiced dismay over Mapusa MLA Francis D'Souza's indifferent attitude to their struggle against the proposed garbage disposal site in Cunchelim. The views were expressed when residents of Cunchelim met at the football ground on Sunday, to take stock of plans to acquire 32050 sq mts of communidade land for the Mapusa Municipal Council's (MMC) proposed garbage disposal site. CAC President Shashikant Kandolkar informed that the Mapusa MLA was recently not co-operating with residents in opposing the site chosen at Cunchelim, unlike earlier when he went with the Committee members to find legal answers to the problem. "Even though the CAC had approached him to seek an appointment with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on this vexed issue, he was not keen in doing so. Contrast this with other MLAs, who have fought for residents of their respective constituencies,' Kandolkar said. "Since the MMC is also controlled by his panel, D'Souza could have impressed his councillors to veto the site at Cunchelim and instead, approve a nearby site at Morod, which is near to the market,' he added. Kandolkar informed residents that opposition to the site would be challenged legally, and asked them to rally behind the CAC, who have been working to oppose the site. A villager from the neigbouring village of Siolim, Sitaram, said he and other Siolcars would also be affected if the proposed garbage treatment plant were to be erected. He explained that Cunchelim is a catchment area, where the water collected in the monsoons goes towards the Cun-chelim spring and terminates at Siolim. Mathew Braganza, attorney of the Communidade of Cunchelim, who was specially invited for the meet, agreed to support the villagers in their fight to oppose the government's notification in trying to acquire Communidade land. Earlier, CAC secretary Paul D'Souza briefed the residents of the work that CAC had done so far and urged them to object in writing to the Land Acquisition Officer within the stipulated time on the move to acquire the land.
