As per the directives, Tiverem-Orgao panchayat sarpanch along with panchas and residents from Tariwada-Marcel visited a company for an inspection of the effluent treatment plant. On Monday, Sarpanch Sanket Amonkar along with panchas and residents from Tariwada visited the site. "I am satisfied with the work done by the company, since whatever the committee had asked, they have done. But if the company fails to maintain these conditions then a strict action will be taken against them and we would insist to stop the work on the same day,' said Mr Amonkar. Residents from Tariwada were not satisfied with the work done by the company, local Bharat Fadte of Tariwada said: "We cannot trust the company anymore. After several warnings they continued to release wastewater into the canal. We are also not technically qualified to understand their effluent treatment plant. We don't want to rely on their assurances. It is up to panchayat to monitor now. We don't want any more fish deaths.' The company General Manager A K Singh said: "We have upgraded the effluent treatment plant and on an average one lakh litre of wastewater is being processed daily.' But Mr Singh was tight lipped over the release of wastewater since February 18. He also informed that during monsoon, there is will be no production and agreed to inform the panchayat whenever they start the production activity. Mr Amonkar also asked villagers to keep a vigil and report to him incase they notice any wastewater into the canal. It may be recalled that since February 18, there has been mysterious deaths of marine life. The State Pollution Control Board in its report had held the company as the prime suspect. Residents had also accused the company for the fish death and also the local panchayat for handling the issue lightly. Tiverem-Orgao panachyat and residents from Kumbharjua panchayat had lodged complaints. Fishermen from the locality are dependent on the fish catch from the canal. A committee comprising panchayat members was appointed to inspect the company. Directives were given to increase the capacity of the effluent treatment plant, construct a retaining wall and not to release any wastewater into the canal. Interestingly, a compensation of Rs 4,000 each was paid to 15 fishermen from Marcel by the panchayat, much before the report was out. Sources say that the company had paid Rs 60,000 to Tiverem-Orgao panchayat, which was then distributed by Priol MLA Deepak Dhavlikar. The company was given two months time to complete the necessary modifications. However, the date ended on May 24.
