The fish, which was once found in abundance in the rivers along the Himalayas, particularly in the fresh water of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, North Bengal, Punjab and Haryana and some parts of Kerala is facing extinction due to increased human activities, catching of brood fishes and juveniles and destruction of breeding and dwelling grounds.
