As part of the exercise to completely eliminate filarial from the State, the Directorate of Health services will undertake the Mass Drug Administration in South Goa district from November 11.
This was decided after a meeting the representatives of health services had with the district collector, G P Naik on Wednesday. This is the sixth year that the DHS is undertaking the exercise of administering drugs to contain malaria in the State.
Dr Deepak Kabadi told newsmen after the meeting that the drug is administered to prevent transmission of filarial, adding that all the health officials have been entrusted with the job in their respective jurisdiction.
Soliciting cooperation from the public to make the exercise a success, Dr Kabadi said the DHS will be assisted by anganwadi workers, clubs, local NGOs and others.
He said health experts are evaluating whether Goa is free from filaria, adding that the DHS has completed five years with the exercise, adding that the time has come to completely eliminate filarial from the state.
Saying that Goa has around 191 filaria cases, Dr Kabadi said 76 cases have been found in south Goa, but hastened to add that though the patients are suffering from filarial, they are not transmitting the disease.
Replying to a question, he said the tables distributed by the DHS are free from any side effects. From November 11, DHS officials will move from house to house to administer the drug, he said, while seeking cooperation from the people.
