Mass illiteracy in South Asia

A U.N. funded think tank said that Pakistan, with 50 million illiterate adults, should amend its constitution to make primary education compulsory and give schooling the first claim on budgetary resources. A report on Human Development in South Asia issued by the Islamabad based Human Development Centre think tank said that "while South Asia is the most illiterate region in the world, Pakistan is among the most illiterate countries within South Asia," the report said.
