Large scale encroachment of forest land was noticed in Pooyamkutty when Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan, accompanied by mediapersons and forest officials, visited Kunjuppanakudi and Warriam areas of Pooyamkutty forest in Kuttampuzha panchayat. Trees in thousands of acres of forest land were found felled and cleared by setting fire to he forest.
