NONGPOH: Less than 24 hours after traffic was stalled for some hours on the Umiam-Jorabat Expressway due t a landslide on Saturday afternoon, a massive landslip hit the highway again on Sunday afternoon completely blocking the highway and cutting off road communication between Shillong and Guwahati.
Sunday’s massive landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall for the past few days, occurred at Umling near the Kargil Petrol Pump leaving thousands of commuters stranded on either side. Ri Bhoi Police informed that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has pressed into service dozers and excavators to clear the Expressway.
Normal traffic flow on the arterial highway is likely to be resumed only by Monday evening provided the accumulated debris is cleared by then.
Sunday’s landslide occurred almost exactly at the same spot where a massive landslide had resulted in the death of one occupant of a vehicle and damage to several vehicles on October 6, 2014.
This time, however, there has been no report of any casualty or damage so far.
District Administration official and a Ri Bhoi Police team led by Superintendent of Police G.D. Kharwanlang rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Police managed to divert light vehicles through an interior road though heavy vehicles have been completely stranded since Sunday afternoon.
Following this incident, Ri Bhoi Police has requested commuters coming from Guwahati to Shillong to divert from Byrnihat towards Umden and thence to Nongpoh, whereas all light vehicles going from Shillong to Guwahati have been asked to divert through Umling-Sohkhwai route and then to 20 Mile to rejoin the highway.
It was also informed that commuters intending to travel between Guwahati and Shillong can take the Shillong- Mairang- Patharkhmah- Rani route whereas all vehicles going towards Garo Hills can take the Nongstoin- Shallang – Tura route.
