As part of the Golden jubilee celebration of Independence, the Forest Department plans to launch a massive tree planting campaign in the city. As many as two lakh saplings are to be planted in Chennai, under the "City Beautificatin Project", at a cost of Rs. 2.77 crores.The campaign will be part of a State-wide greening and afforestation programme, which the department hopes to launch by April. Each sapling would be raised at a cost of Rs. 138 and a total of Rs. 3.82 crores has been allocated to implement the programme throughout the State.
