Mautam famine hits eastern Mizoram

With armies of rodents ravaging paddy fields in hilly areas, villagers in the eastern and north-eastern parts of Mizoram are facing an acute famine and officials fear the situation may worsen next year. James Lalsiamliana, assistant plant protection officer in the state agriculture department, today said that Dulte and surrounding villages in Champhai district had been hit hard by a sudden spurt in the rat population.
