Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday announced the creation of three more districts taking their number to 75 in Uttar Pradesh, the biggest state of the country. The newly-created districts will be known as Prabuddh Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar and Bheem Nagar.
The announcements were made in three separate meetings held at Shamli, Hapur and Sambhal where the Chief Minister had gone to review developments projects.
Mayawati announced the creation of the districts of Shamli, to be carved out from Muzaffarnagar, Hapur, to be carved out from Ghaziabad, and Sambhal from Moradabad and named them as Prabuddh Nagar, Panchsheel Nagar and Bheem Nagar respectively.
"These new districts will help in better administration of the region and also fulfil the long-pending demand of the people who had petitioned the government for creation of new districts," Mayawati said while addressing a rally in Sambhal, in Moradabad district.
She said that Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was of the view that smaller the administrative units, the better it was to maintain law and order.
She said that keeping this spirit alive, her government had decided to form new districts.
In the morning, Mayawati went to Shamli, a tehsil headquarters of Muzaffarnagar district, and announced that it had been made a district and christened it Prabuddh Nagar.
This new western UP district, having an estimated population of about 13 lakh, will comprise Shamli and Kairana tehsils with headquarters at Shamli.
Later, Mayawati visited Hapur town in Ghaziabad district and announced creation of a separate district, named Panchsheel Nagar with Hapur tehsil as its headquarters. Dhaulana was also declared as a new tehsil. The new district has a population of 10 lakh and comprise three tehsils--Hapur, Garmukteshwar and Dhaulana.
At the last stop of her tour at Sambhal in Moradabad district, Mayawati announced the creation of Bheem Nagar district with Sambhal as its headquarters. It will comprise Sambhal, Chandausi and Gunnaur tehsils.
The creation of the new districts, with just a few months left for the next Assembly elections, is seen as a political strategy to woo the voters of the region who had been demanding the status of district for long. The move is particularly being seen as an attempt of the Chief Minister to placate Jats, who are in majority in these regions.
The farmers of the western UP were up in arms against the Mayawati government a few months back over land acquisition. It is also being viewed as an astute political move of Mayawati, who is also the national president of Bahujan Samaj Party, to extend olive branch to the people of this area.
Earlier, Mayawati had created two new districts of Kanshiram Nagar from Etah and Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar (Amethi) from Sultanpur, the parliamentary constituency of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
