MBA starts campaign against coal dust

The Mormugao Bachao Abhiyan (MBA) has commenced a signature campaign to protest against coal dust pollution in port town due to coal and coke handling at Mormugao Port at berth no 10, 11, 5A and 6A. It may be recalled that recently the Port Town witnessed massive protests against coal handling activity in Vasco due to which, activity at the MPT port was completely paralyzed for three days forcing MPT chairman Praveen Agarwal to sign Memorandum of Understating between MPT, State Government and MBA to stop the coal and coke handling at berth no 10 and 11. Challenging the MoU signed between three bodies few coal importers had filed a writ-petition in Bombay High Court at Goa. The court had directed MPT to convene meeting of all concerned parties connected with coal and coke handling at MPT berths and reached at a understanding prior to March 24. MBA convener Simon Pereira while talking to Herald informed that doctors from port town have supported the signature campaign of the MBA and raised their concern over respiratory ailments caused due coal dust pollution. "Thousands of Vascoites have signed the signature campaign which would be submitted later to the High Court with copies to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and chief minister Digambar Kamat and MPT chairman Praveen Agarwal,' informed Pereira.
