MCD sets up committee to oversee road repair

NEW DELHI: Under pressure from various quarters for its failure to repair potholes on the Capital's roads following tall promises, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to constitute a monitoring committee under the chairmanship of Additional Commissioner (Engineering) to ensure that the work of road repair is completed within 10 days. The decision was announced by Deputy Leader of House Ved Prakash Gupta on Wednesday. The committee comprising Engineer-in-Chief Ravi Dass and eight Chief Engineers would monitor day-to-day progress of these works. Mr. Gupta also summoned a special meeting of Engineering Department officials where conditions of roads were discussed and directions to carry out repairs on a war footing were given. The Engineer-in-Chief, Chief Engineers, Superintendent Engineers and Executive Engineers were also present at the meeting. The Deputy Leader of House informed that the MCD had identified stretches of 319 roads where repair works were required to be carried out immediately. The total area of these roads requiring urgent repair comes to about 2,02,412 square metres. Mr. Gupta said: "The road repair work would be carried out in three stages. The first stage would include roads to be repaired by the MCD staff and the second stage would include roads whose repair works have to be carried out by contractors as they are under warranty period of contract. The third stage would comprise those roads that are beyond warranty period and require initiation of a fresh process to undertake repair works.' "Some roads are being repaired by contractors at their own expenses since these are within the contract period of five years,' he added. These roads include Kalka Devi Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhaya Marg, Shankar Road, Krishnan Road, Bande Matram Marg, Jharonda Border Road, Palam Chowk Road among others. The roads on which patch repair works is to be carried out at departmental level include Swami Viveknand Marg in R.K.Puram, East and West Road at Vasant Vihar, Munirka Marg, Geetanjali Road, Khirki Road, Hundred Feet Road near Anuvarth Marg, Kalka Dass Marg, Link Road, Jungpura, Bhishma Pithamah Marg, internal Roads of South Extension, R Block Greater Kailash-I, internal Roads of Kalkaji, Najafgarh Road from Kirti Nagar to Moti Nagar Crossing, Block No.2 Road Subash Nagar, New Rohtak Road from Kavita Colony to Mangolpuri police station. Mr. Gupta directed officials of the Engineering Department to ensure that work orders issued so far are carried out within the stipulated period and defaulting contractors are penalised.
