Medical help reaches diarrhoea-hit area

ASANSOL, Oct. 12: Two days after reports of at least 10 diarrhoea-related deaths in the Kulti municipality area became public, a joint team of experts, including paramedics, today began delivering medical assistance to residents. The team comprises five experts each from the Eastern Coalfields Limited and district health services. Over the past week, diarrhoea has claimed the lives of at least 10 people, including five children, and has affected over 2,500 residents in four wards of Kulti. Despite a spurt in the incidence of diarrhoea among the local people, the Kulti civic body allegedly remained indifferent. The district administration finally woke up after Asansol Member of Parliament Mr Bangsagopal Chowdhury made several visits to the affected wards. After assessing the situation, Mr Chowdhury contacted state administration officials, expressing concern at the lack of initiative taken by the district health authorities to ameliorate the condition of those affected and those endangered by diarrhoeal attack. Mr Chowdhury, who is also chairman of the Asansol-Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), squarely blamed the Kulti civic body run by the Opposition, claiming that it remained indifferent to the menace even as patients, especially from wards 25, 26,, 27 and 28 sought assistance at the Asansol SD Hospital in the course of the past week.
