KOTTAYAM: With the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) submitting a negative Environment Impact Study (EIS) report on the Sabari Rail from Angamali to Azhutha, the meeting scheduled by the district and Railway authorities on August 4 at Pala to hear the complaints of the aggrieved in the land acquisition for the railway line, may turn out to be a noisy affair.
The study done by S. Shanker of Forestry and Human Dimensions Division at the KFRI has recommended against the project for various reasons.
According to the study, the proposed 130.9-km alignment was basically unscientific as it had been changed several times at the instance of people whose land was initially marked for takeover.
As per the current alignment, 1,273 residential buildings belonging to 2,429 families in the districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki would have to be destroyed.
About 515 ha of land, most of it prime plantations or sensitive wetland, would have to be acquired for the project.
