The empowered group of ministers (eGoM) meeting scheduled to be held on Tuesday to discuss outstanding issues concerning special economic zones (SEZs) including relaxing the controversial 5,000-hectare ceiling on large SEZs, has been called off. The eGoM, which was initially slated on April 22, was postponed to April 29 and later cancelled. The Centre has not fixed any fresh date for the meeting so far. Though no official reason was cited for the cancellation, sources said the government wants to go slow on some of the sensitive issuesthat need to be sorted out, especially since the Parliament is in session. Besides the 5,000-hectare cap issue, the other matters in the agenda included allowing developers to build more facilities in the non-processing area (housing only social amenities and where industrial activity is not permitted) without tax concessions. Also, the meeting was to consider granting service tax exemptions to developers, co-developers and units as well as the issue of fixing an export obligation of SEZ units. On the agenda was the denotification of notified SEZs, particularly following legal complications regarding awarding compensation to developers in the recent controversy over scrapping of SEZs in Goa.
