Meghalaya asks miners to adhere to MoU

Meghalaya Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee on Saturday asked miners in the State to adhere to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by them with the State Government to prevent taking outside labourers. Addressing the concluding 2nd North East Mine Environment and Mineral Conservation Week 2007-2008 organised by Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt Ltd here, Chatterjee advocated scientific, sustainable extraction of the mineral resouces. Chatterjee said the resources should be judiciously extracted so that the future generation could also use them. He also asked miners to adopt environmental conservation measures at the mining sites, to keep area attractive because large number of tourists visit Meghalaya. The chief secretary also said that proper health care should be provided to employees working at the mines and money be compensated in case of ill health.
