During its first meeting on Friday, the all-party committee constituted by the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) coalition Government on uranium mining decided to form three groups of experts to study the implications of uranium mining by the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) in Kylleng-Pyndeng-Sohiong in West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. CM Donkupar Roy, the chairman of the committee, said while one expert group would be from outside the state, the other two would comprise officials from Meghalaya. One of these groups will include officials from the state health department, who will visit Domasiat, known for its uranium reserves, where some locals were involved in looking for the radioactive element with an official of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) in 1991. However, some members of the committee verbalised their misgivings, most notably Deputy Chief Minister and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) president H S Lyngdoh and Urban Affairs Minister and Khyun Hynniwtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) president Paul Lyngdoh. Even as the CM was briefing the media, H S Lyngdoh interjected and said, "there are no experts who will tell us about the radiation." Paul Lyngdoh, meanwhile, rubbished the claims of UCIL's white paper that stated most people support the mining of uranium. He quoted the Deputy Commissioner's report saying "only 23 per cent" were in favour of it. He did add that his party would change its stand if the experts provided evidence that mining would not cause health hazards.
