Melting snow helps reservoirs ride out dry spell

New Delhi: Snowmelt from the high Himalayas is keeping reservoirs afloat and aiding normal rate of hydel generation in spite of the extended hot spell and a delayed monsoon. Water levels in reservoirs of Bhakra-Beas and Tehri projects — the two main hydel generation plants in the north that use stored water to produce electricity — are normal, sources said. The reservoirs of the Bhakra-Beas project spans Himachal and Punjab, while the Tehri reservoir is in Uttarakhand. Both these projects are lifelines for northern states, including Delhi, as they are a major source of electricity and water. Executives from both the projects told TOI there was no cause for concern as of now and the present water storage and discharge levels can be maintained even if the monsoon is delayed by another week or so. But the situation could change if monsoon is delayed more than a fortnight. “Our present storage level is 1,536 ft against a capacity of 1,680 ft. Our minimum level is 1,462 ft. Our discharge level stands at 29,600 cusecs as per plan. So there’s enough carryover of water,” a senior Bhakra Beas Management Board executive told TOI.
