It is certainly not a bumpy ride for the DMRC. A study by IIT students, based on vibration levels inside the trains, states the metro is one of the most comfortable modes of transport and that it adheres to international standards. The study, carried out with the help of equipment developed by UK's Loughborough University, was conducted on the elevated and underground sections of all three operational lines of the Delhi Metro. The results from all sections were within the "most comfortable' category. A group of 10 IIT students travelling on the Metro used the potentiometer to judge comfort levels. The device measures vibrations experienced by passengers in trains. "It was found that vibration inside the trains was less than 0.315 m per second squared, which is the most comfortable level according to ISO standards,' DMRC Chief Public Relations Officer Anuj Dayal said. This is the first time such a device has been used to study comfort levels in India. A survey was conducted with 75 passengers at three stations covering lines One, Two and Three. Of them, 34 commuters (45 per cent) ranked the Metro ride as very comfortable, while the rest said it was comfortable. No commuter said the Metro was uncomfortable. Data regarding vibration and human responses was then recorded by a central computer, which calculated the real ride comfort. The DMRC is also collaborating with IIT-Delhi in other areas and is jointly developing course content for a PG Diploma in Metro Technology, which will help develop a cadre of Metro specialists for the large number of Metro projects coming up in various cities of India.
