The troubled Mexican sugar industry has launched its first project for the production of ethanol as a vehicle fuel. Three sugar mills would supply 10 million litres of ethanol alcohol which would be added to gasoline used by Mexico City government vehicles, said Mr. Alberto Santos de Hoyas, president of the National Chamber of Sugar and Alcohol Industries. The agreement between the chamber and the city aimed to ease high pollution, partly caused by vehicle exhaust and boost the sugar industry which faced low prices and financial problems, he said.
