One Dead, 10 Kids From AMC Schools Hospitalized
Ahmedabad: A seven-year old girl died on Monday night after suspected food poisoning at a municipal school on Saturday. Ten other students of two schools that got the same food and water have been admitted to Civil Hospital and private hospit a l s i n A s a r w a . Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has begun a probe into the incident.
According to AMC officials, the poisoning took place at the AMCrun Hindi School No. 9 and Gujarati School No.20in Asarwa.Pooja Hiralal Patel, 7, a Standard III student attheHindi School,died on Monday after being taking ill on Saturday.
The incident has enraged parents of the students who are now under treatment at various hospitals. According to them, the mid-day meal scheme launched to attract weaker sections to education was responsible. Most students affected belong to lower middle class families from the area, said investigators. The mood at B7 wardof Civil Hospitalwas grim, as news of Pooja’s death filtered in to parents.
Kajal Sen, 10, a class VI student, now at Civil Hospital told TOI that school authorities had not had its water tank cleaned.
“When I returnedhome on Saturday, I felt uneasy but my parents thought it was because of theincreasing heat,” she said. Ramesh Sen, her father. He added that when he found out about other students also taking ill, he immediately admitted Kajal to hospital.
“We have complained frequently about the poor quality of food and dirty water tank, but the authorities have never taken it seriously,” he said.
Other students admitted to the hospital echoed similar concerns. “I suffered from severe diarrhea and vomiting after returning home on Saturday. The food tasted bitter and we sensed something was wrong with it. Even thoughI ate very littlethat day,Istillfellill,” saidPriyaPandey, 7.
