Mid, farwest rains toll at 41

Floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall since Friday continue to claim lives in various mid and farwestern districts of the country. Thousands have been displaced while hundreds are still awaiting rescue in their waterlogged villages. In Kanchanpur district alone, the death toll has reached 15, with seven more reported deaths, most of them children. The dead have been listed as Puja Sarki, 3, and Khagendra Sarki, 7, of Dodhara VDC-8; Anita Chand, 5 and Bhim Bahadur Bohara, 10, of Shreepur VDC-1; Anup Lama, 26, of Kalika VDC; Jit Singh Thakur, 6, of Rautali Bichwa VDC-8 and a woman from Tribhuvan VDC-9. Floods have severely hit VDCs, including Shankerpur, Rautali Bichwa, Beldadi, Kalika and Krishnapur in the district. Over 5,000 people have been displaced by the floods. Over 1,000 people at Radhapur and Jhilmila villages are awaiting rescue. In Kailali district, two more unidentified bodies were recovered from a local river at Pahalmanpur VDC, putting the number of deaths at 14. According to Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), 28 persons are still missing. Meanwhile, the rescue effort of Nepal Army personnel is still underway in the district. Over 1,000 are yet to be evacuated. The number of flood displaced, taking shelter in local schools and VDC offices has exceeded 10,000, NRCS informed. Three persons of a family perished in landslide while two young girls died after being swept away by a river in Bajhang district. Siblings Basanta Kumar Kami, 6, Nirmal Kumar Kami, 10 and Ghanturi Kami, 17, of Deukot VDC-8 in the district were killed when a landslide crushed their house late Saturday night. Similarly, Saraswati Kumari Joshi, 17, of Subeda-3 and Bharati Kumari Bista, 16, of Datola-8 were killed after being swept away by a local river on Sunday, police said. In Salyan district, three-year old Sirjana Giri of Dadagaon-9 was killed after being buried by landslide on Monday. One Thagu Devi Bhat and her four daughters were killed by a landslide in Laxmipur-2 of Doti district, Sunday night. Similarly, Prakash Singh Thagunna, 18, of Khar VDC-8 in Darchula district was also killed after being swept away by the local Godaney River on Saturday. Police recovered Thagunna's body on Sunday. Meanwhile, Minister for Labor and Transport Management Lekhraj Bhatta, along with CA members inspected flood hit districts, including Kanchanpur and Kailali on Monday. Minister Bhatta said the meeting of the Central Natural Disaster Relief Committee has released Rs 9 million for immediate relief of the flood hit. He also said the government will soon deploy a team of health officers to flood affected regions.
