Mild earthquake rocks valley

A mild earthquake that rocked the entire Kashmir valley early morning caused panic among the people. The earthquake was followed by heavy torrential rains during the day. According to Director Metrological (DM) department Kashmir, Sonam Lotus, the magnitude of the quake was 5.5 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was stated to be Afghanistan and Pakistan border with a longitude of 36.1 degrees North and latitude 70.5 Degrees. The tremor occurred at 10.28 ISD. After the tremor, the residents came out of their homes as the windows and doors of the structures rattled. Police control rooms across the valley confirmed that no loss of life in the tremor. "After confirming from all the districts there is no loss of life or loss of property," officer on duty in control told this correspondent. Here it needs a mention that Kashmir has experienced death and destruction in an earthquake on October 8, 2005. In that quake around 800 people died and hundreds of residential houses were razed to ground in the quake. The torrential rains since morning will continue for coming three four days. "The rains are because of western disturbances," DM Soman Lotus said adding, "The rains will continue for three to four days." Soman said that there will be dip in temperature in coming days. However, he ruled out any chances of floods.
