Nellore, Dec. 2: More than 1,132 hectares of land dotted by silica mines is going to be a part of the Port-based SEZ proposed in the southern side of the Krishnapatnam port. The port itself will run the special economic zone, revenue officials said. Incidentally, the extent is under lease to 70 silica mines and most them have approached the courts to retain control after authorities served notices to acquire the land. In fact, the authorities have procured more than 6,000 acres in Chillakur and Kota mandal for the SEZ and this includes the 1,132 acres. Sources in the mines and geology department said that most of the 6,000 acres located in 10 villages was rich with mineral deposits. They are at a loss to understand the reasons for assigning silica mines and land with mineral deposits for a port-based SEZ.
