Karimnagar, Aug. 18: Even while various trade unions are trying to ensure the participation of the Singareni coalminers in the ensuing nation-wide strike call on August 20, the Singareni management has launched a campaign to persuade the workmen to desist from the one-day strike.
The company embarked on a division-wise campaign to make the workmen realise the ill-effects of the strike on productivity and welfare of the workmen besides on the coal-based industries. The move assumes significance in the backdrop of the production loss suffered by the company to the tune of around 3 lakh tonnes of coal worth about Rs 30 crore due to the heavy rains recently.
The company, which has 13 opencast mines and 42 underground mines spread in Karimnagar, Khammam, Adilabad and Warangal districts, has set an ambitious coal production target of 43.56 million tonnes of coal for 2008-09. However, the company achieved about 15.08 million tonnes of coal production till August 12, sources said. The company has accorded top priority to achieve the remaining 28.48 million tonnes of coal production before March 2009.
In an effort to realise the task, the company has been employing the state-of-the-art technologies to optimise the coal production and reduce the production cost. In this backdrop, the company initiated a vigorous campaign to highlight the need for a collective endeavour to steer the company on the path of progress without any hindrance to the production.
Ramagundam-II division general manager Rajender Reddy said that one-day strike would result in a loss of 1.40 lakh tonnes of coal worth Rs 16.73 crore. "The workmen will also suffer loss of wages to the tune of Rs 7.31 crore on account of the one-day strike," he pointed out. The RG-II division alone will suffer production loss to the tune of 16,957 tonnes of coal worth about Rs 1.98 crore, Mr Rajender Reddy said.
