Petroleum Minister Muhammad Asif on Tuesday asked the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to frame new laws to ensure safety in handling and use of liquid petroleum gas (LPG). He was addressing an LPG exhibition organised here by the Ministry of Petroleum and LPG sector stakeholders to identify factors which made LPG production stagnant over the years. He said that the government would like to take every stakeholder of LPG sector on board to make the policies more workable, and utilise maximum potential to increase LPG production to meet the growing energy demand. The Minister sought recommendations from the stakeholder to put in place a better system for the use of LPG for different categories of consumers. He said the government was striving to enhance indigenous production of LPG, besides finalising the plan to import gas from other sources, in particular, import of gas from Iran and other countries. He said that Pakistan's pace of progress and economic development was directly related to availability of energy, and the government would explore every possible avenue to strike a balance in the demand and supply of gas. The Minister said that the private sector would be given complete support in playing even more vibrant role in promoting LPG use and create a competition among sellers to ensure its availability at reasonable rates. Earlier, different speakers made presentations to the minister on LPG availability, demand and supply, the role of the Ogra and other bodies in framing the law for the protection of interest of all the parties to LPG sectors.
