BHUBANESWAR: Indravati Hydro Power Station (IHPS) which was shut down yesterday following objection from the Water Resources Department resumed power generation today following intervention of Minister of State for Energy Atanu Sabyasachi.
The closure of IHPS and scaling down of generation from Upper Kolab triggered a shortage of about 1,200 Mega Watt of power in the State on Saturday. The State Load Dispatching Centre (SLDC) resorted to load shedding in different areas even after overdrawal of power from the Eastern Grid.
As the district administration of Kalahandi and the Water Resources Department asked the Orissa Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) to stop generation of power from IHPS for the second consecutive day today in view of the flood in the Hati river, the Energy Minister intervened and ensured power generation from the hydro power station.
With a generating capacity of 600 MW, Indravati is the major hydro energy generator of the State. As water released in the power channel falls in the Hati river, further aggravating the flood situation, the district administration usually objects to release of water from the reservoir when the river is in spate.
Power generation from Upper Kolab was also reduced yesterday due to spilling of water from the reservoir.
This led to a crisis situation and the SLDC instructed OPTCL, the State-owned transmission utility, to go for load shedding, sources in the OPTCL said.
The total hydro power generation on Saturday was 694 MW as against average generation of more than 1,000 MW.
However, the situation improved during the evening peak today following power generation from Indravati which was running to full capacity and Upper Kolab.
While the water level in all the major reservoirs of the State was much below the last year
