Not averse in sacking the Board HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, AUG 27 - The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) was today whipped on the floor of the House with Environment Minister Alex Sequeira agreeing that the Board was playing football by passing the buck on other departments over serious issues of pollution irking the State's environment. The Environment Minister told the House that he himself was frustrated and would not hesitate to explore the possibility of sacking or dismissing the Board following demands from the MLAs on the same. Sequeira today faced a volley of allegation from Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco over inaction on the part of the GSPCB over pollution at the Sonsoddo garbage site. He said, "Why has the Board not taken any action on its own until people began agitating.' He said that the Board showed no seriousness in the matter even after he filed a complaint of pollution and hazards at the site. "Are they waiting for something to happen to take action,' he quizzed Sequeira. It was pointed out that in case of complaints of mining pollution, that the Board dos not conduct tests at its own laboratories but acts on reports sought for from private laboratories. "If it is not doing any lab testing nor taking action in cases of complaints of pollution what is the use of the Pollution Control Board,' said Calangute MLA Agnel Fernandes strongly backing Lourenco's arguments in the matter. Even Priol MLA Dipak Dhavalikar complained bitterly of inaction from the Board on complaints of pollution reported in his constituency. The Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar also pointed out to clearances granted by the Board to mining companies without proper verification. He further pointed out to a case where a clearance was issued in he name of a deceased person. Here Speaker Pratapsing Rane said, "It appears that the PCB has extended its limits to heaven.' Mr Sequeira who conceded to all the arguments against the PCB told Lourenco that he would ask the directorate of Science Technology and Environment to look into the pollution aspect at Sonsoddo.
