The shipping ministry has approached the ministry of external affairs for inclusion of inland water transport (IWT) in the Indo-Nepal treaty. This would help the two countries in moving cargo through the river transport mode. India and Nepal already have a transit agreement for rail and road transport modes. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has been asked to work out the technical details of possible co-operation between the two countries for transit through waterways.
