The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said it would seek compensation if Japanese fishermen sustain damage to their equipment or other property as a result of the activities of South Korean boats operating south of Hokkaido. A high-ranking ministry official also said that any refusal to pay compensation would prompt the ministry to consider banning all South Korean boats from Japan's exclusion zone as defined under a new fishing agreement yet to be finally negotiated.
