The crustal movements of Miyakejima island (Japan) have accelerated since a large-scale eruption of Mt. Oyama on Aug. 18, the Construction Ministry's Geographical Survey Institute said Thursday. The Coordinating Committee for the Prediction of Volcanic Eruptions on Thursday afternoon examined data obtained by the institute to analyze whether the acceleration of the crustal movement is a sign that volcanic activity would further intensify. The institute has placed global positioning system devices at four locations along the coast of the island to monitor the movements.
