Moderate earthquake hits most areas

An elderly man, panicked at the moderate earthquake that shook most areas of the country early Sunday, died of a cardiac arrest. Many across the country were injured. The earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, according to the Met Office in Dhaka. The quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, according to the Dhaka University geology department, equipped with an earth observatory. Indian and US geological surveys measured earthquake at 4.9 on the scale. The Dhaka Met Office established the epicentre of the earthquake at a place in Sylhet and Dhaka University said the earthquake had taken place in the Dapsi fault in Mymensingh at a depth of about 5.2 kilometres. Experts said the early Sunday quake, which was felt in areas including Dhaka, Tangail, Mymensingh, Narsingdi, Habiganj and Rajshahi, forewarned a severe earthquake in future. In Sirajganj, Abul Hossain, 65, died of a cardiac arrest during panic exit at Nadipara Tarash. At least 50 students at Dhaka University were injured as they jumped off the halls of resident during the earthquake. Many city residents woke up and screamed as buildings were jolted for a while. Several students at the Mohsin and the Jagannath Hall at Dhaka University panicked and jumped off the first floor. Around 30 of the injured were admitted to hospital. The Dhaka University Medical Centre treated at least 15 students. The Dhaka University syndicate, meanwhile, Sunday night decided to relocate the residents of three halls in view of their vulnerability to earthquake. The university syndicate decided to relocate the residents of the central block of the Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall to the hall's auditorium and the university gymnasium. Residents of an old building at the Jagannath Hall will be moved to other buildings of the hall and to the provost's bungalow at the Shahidullah Hall. Girls residing in the building meant for honour's students at the Roquiah Hall will be relocated to the Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani Hostel.
