THE Corporation of Tiruchy is planning to set up a modern sewage treatment plant as part of the underground drainage (UGD) project within the city. The Tiruchy-Srirangam UGD project, along with the earlier one which is already functioning, is nearing completion. A third phase is also being drafted to accommodate the areas not covered under the earlier two phases. Meanwhile, the first phase is getting a new treatment plant in Panjappur with three pools and the cleaning process is under implementation. Under the river water protection scheme, the Tiruchy-Srirangam UGD works are being carried out for the left-out pockets in Ponmalai and Srirangam areas. For the third phase, a treatment plant in an area of 200 acres is being planned near the existing waste water pools. The third phase is likely to be implemented with an allocation of Rs 160 crore. Treatment plant for this project will also have to be set up in Panjappur for which 245 acres of land is needed. Meanwhile, a team comprising the Mayor, Commissioner and other officials had undertaken a trip to Pune, Navi Mumbai and Goa to review the modern sewage treatment programmes there. Subsequently, the City Corporation has planned to set up the modern sewage treatment plant in Panjappur. It requires a minimum of 50 acres while the rest of the area could be developed as a commercial complex, adding to the revenue of the civic body. A resolution will be passed to obtain the consent of the councillors at a meeting to be held on April 30. Under the Tiruchy-Srirangam scheme, individual connections will be provided to 23,775 residences.
