Moragahakanda reservoir sub dam and alternative routes commences

Construction work on the sub-dam and the alternative routes of the Moragahakanda reservoir have been started according to the Chief Residential Engineer D. B. Wijeratne. Giving details of the work schedule to be completed within this year Wijeratne said the extent of the sub-dam is 45 metres and it is 20 metres in height. The alternative road is a distance of 10 kilometres from Kongahawela to the Moragahakanda reservoir. The total cost of the alternative road is around Rs. 37 1/2 billion at the rate of Rs. 3 b - per kilometre. Total cost of the work in hand is Rs. 155 b of which Rs. 50 b is borne by the Japanese Government while the balance is met by the Sri Lankan Government. Our future is dependent on this project, which is the biggest project carried out in the country. This provides irrigational facilities for Yala and Maha season for Raja Rata and Meda Rata. The people are fortunate to have such a massive agricultural project - which had been delayed for a long time, but it has been launched under the Government of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and has lit hopes the people of our country.
