More girls born in city: 871 per 1,000 boys in 2007

The Pune Municipal Corporation has confirmed that there has been an increase of 30 girls being registered at birth per 1,000 boys over the last five years. This reverses the downward slide of girls born per 1,000 boys as the number had dipped to 841 in 2002, making it a skewed sex ratio for the city. The reversal in sex ratio has come about with the number of girls climbing to 871 per 1,000 boys in 2007. Even as Dr D D Chandakkar, Deputy Health Officer, PMC said it was a significant achievement, activists feel that much needs to be done as the number of girls compared to that of boys is still low. Chandakkar pointed out that a total of 44,418 births were registered in Pune in 2002 out of which the number of male children were 24,125 and females were 20,293, thus arriving at the sex ratio of 841 girls per 1,000 boys. Against this, in 2007 there were 48,615 children registered in Pune
